NYC Mayoral Candidate Zoran Mamdani’s Rapid Rise

In front of a lively crowd, New York City mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani declared his campaign “a people’s movement.” With just over a week until Election Day, around 10,000 supporters came out to hear Mamdani, joined by notable progressives like Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic Socialist and state representative from Queens, made headlines in June by winning the Democratic nomination for mayor, beating out former Governor Andrew Cuomo and several other contenders.

Now, just four months later, Mamdani is on the verge of potentially making history as the first Muslim and millennial mayor of the largest city in the U.S. If he wins, it would mark a significant achievement for the Democratic Socialists of America.

Should Mamdani claim victory in the general election, it would likely signal a growing influence of the socialist faction within the Democratic Party.

Interestingly, a Gallup poll from August indicated that two-thirds of Democrats have a positive view of socialism, while only 42% see capitalism in a similarly favorable light.

Cuomo, who’s attempting a political comeback after his resignation amid scandals four years ago, has described himself as a true Democrat in this race. He has criticized Mamdani’s democratic socialist policies, suggesting they could drive people and businesses away from the city.

Cuomo has remarked, “Socialists want to take over the Democratic Party. That’s what Bernie Sanders is all about. That’s what AOC is all about.”

Some Republicans view Mamdani’s potential win as a political opportunity. They’ve been keen to portray him as the face of the Democratic Party, especially as it could aid vulnerable Democrats in next year’s midterm elections.

After Representative Hakeem Jeffries, the lead House Democrat from New York, endorsed Mamdani, House Speaker Mike Johnson warned that it shows the success of what he calls a “radical insurgent movement” within the Democratic Party.

However, moderates within the Democratic Party are pushing back against this narrative. Congressman Steve Cohen from Tennessee commented, “I love New York, but it’s a very liberal place, and I don’t know if that necessarily applies to the rest of the country,” following Mamdani’s primary win.

Meanwhile, other names are surfacing as potential candidates for governor in places like New Jersey and Virginia, including moderate Representative Mikie Sherrill and former Representative Abigail Spanberger.

Additionally, a new center-left initiative named “Welcome” released a report stating that leftist ideas have weakened the Democratic Party. They advocate for a shift away from some progressive rhetoric concerning race and LGBTQ issues.
