Amazon’s Zoox Launches Robotaxi Production Facility
Amazon’s Zoox has announced the opening of its first facility dedicated to the production of robotaxis. This development is a significant move toward rolling out a commercial robotaxi service, aimed to rival offerings from Alphabet’s Waymo and Tesla.
Currently, Zoox is conducting tests in several U.S. cities with over 20 vehicles. The company plans to kick off its commercial services in Las Vegas this year, followed by an expansion into San Francisco.
In San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood, the operator is preparing to welcome public riders soon. “The upcoming expansion, combined with the expected demand when we open rides to the general public, and potential growth in other markets in the future, justifies the ramp-up in robotaxi production,” Zoox stated.
The new 220,000-square-foot facility located in Hayward, California, has the capability to assemble more than 10,000 vehicles annually when fully operational, although Zoox has not revealed its initial production goals.
This commercial launch will put Zoox in direct competition with Waymo, which has been running driverless taxis for several years and is broadening its reach across the country. Tesla, on the other hand, aims to introduce its paid robotaxi service on June 22.
Zoox’s robotaxis are unique, resembling small, boxy vehicles without traditional controls like steering wheels or pedals. This sets them apart from companies like Waymo, which modifies existing cars with advanced technology. Tesla’s approach includes utilizing Model Y SUVs equipped with self-driving capabilities, while also planning to unveil a special two-seater “Cybercab” that lacks manual controls.
However, the journey toward fully autonomous vehicles has not been without challenges, including unexpected costs and complex regulations. Zoox, along with Waymo and Tesla, has encountered federal investigations and recalls after various collisions.
Lastly, U.S. government data has reported a 2.8% decline in overseas arrivals in May compared to the previous year, a situation that is anticipated to linger at least into July.
