Zooby Ejiofor’s NBA Dreams in Sight
CHICAGO — Zooby Ejiofor from St. John’s University is getting closer to achieving his long-held dream of entering the NBA.
He’s likely to be the Red Storm’s first player drafted in a decade, with a shot at being a first-round pick if he impresses at the NBA Draft Combine.
“It’s an incredible opportunity,” Ejiofor shared, reflecting on how close his dream feels now.
Since Maurice Harkless was picked in 2012, St. John’s hasn’t had a first-round draft selection, nor have they seen any players drafted since Sir Dominic Pointer in 2015. But Ejiofor has shown he can score, which gives him a good chance.
This defensive powerhouse stands at 6 feet 7.5 inches without shoes, weighs 245 pounds, and boasts a wingspan of 7 feet 2 inches. He’s strong and long, yet he knows he needs to refine his shooting.
It seems he’s been working hard in Las Vegas since St. John’s season ended, and the results are showing at the combine.
“I’ve put in a lot of practice; it’s been hundreds, maybe thousands of shots—3-pointers, mid-range, you name it. I just want to demonstrate more than I did in college,” Ejiofor said about his dedication in Las Vegas.
The improvements are evident.
He managed 17 out of 30 shots off the dribble and made 12 of 25 in the three-point star drill. He completed 16 of 28 attempts in wide and middle workouts and hit 13 of 25 in spot-up shots.
“I think I showed more potential than I did in college, and now I’m here to prove to myself and everyone that I can be successful,” Ejiofor commented. “I was proud of my performance.”
These numbers are definitely going to help his prospects.
On Wednesday, Ejiofor met with six NBA teams, including the Cavaliers, Hornets, Mavericks, Nuggets, and Thunder.
They’re set to play against the Knicks and the Nets soon.
The St. John’s senior skipped the 5-on-5 scrimmage at the combine, but his agent believes he could land between picks No. 25 and No. 35 in the upcoming draft.
Ejiofor was listed as the 43rd prospect by the Nets on Yahoo Sports and ranked 31st by the Knicks according to Tankathon.
“New York is, without a doubt, special to me. I’ve built quite a bit here, and there’s a deep love for this city. It would be amazing to play somewhere familiar,” Ejiofor reflected. “I’m excited about the possibility.”
“I see this as a great opportunity. I’ve spent the last three years in New York, so returning will be meaningful. I’ll be back on the 17th for my graduation, and I can’t wait. It’s going to be a thrilling experience for both me and my family.”
