Zuby Ejiofor’s Emotional Moment After Sweet 16 Loss
Zuby Ejiofor’s feelings about the Sweet 16 game were palpable, and the stakes were high for him and his team.
Ultimately, it was a significant defeat for the St. John’s seniors, who faced Duke in a tense match that ended 80-75 in favor of the Blue Devils, held in Washington, D.C. on Friday.
During a postgame press conference, Ejiofor was clearly moved when reflecting on his time with the Red Storm. When he was asked what he hoped fans would remember about him, he started off strong, but then his emotions took over.
“On the court, I’m just competitive, but… my character means the most to me. And to everyone at Johnny’s… thanks so much. These past three years, just hugging all my teammates…” he said before trailing off, visibly emotional.
In a show of support, teammate Dillon Mitchell comforted Ejiofor with a hand on his shoulder as he stepped away from the podium early.
Earlier in the press conference, Ejiofor had expressed his disappointment about not making it to the Elite 8.
“We’re really disappointed. We had our chances, you know? Felt like we were so close to reaching that elite eighth spot and making it to the Final Four,” Ejiofor remarked.
Coach Rick Pitino also chimed in, noting the inefficiencies of the post-game media schedule. He suggested that the losing team should go first, instead of having to wait while the winning team took their time. “It just doesn’t make sense to have us wait for 30 minutes,” he noted.
Ejiofor transitioned to St. John’s after a freshman year at Kansas, seeking a larger role. By his third year, he had made a name for himself and deeply endeared himself to fans.
This was his final season with the program, and in the recent matchup, he recorded 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and one block.
The contest was a tough battle, especially in the closing minutes. The Blue Devils are set to face either Michigan State or UW in their next game.
