Meta’s AI Expansion Plans Underway

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, is reportedly forming a dedicated team focused on developing artificial general intelligence (AGI)—technology that ideally matches or even exceeds human capabilities. According to a report, Zuckerberg is looking to recruit a group of top-notch AI researchers and engineers and has been holding a series of meetings to discuss this ambitious project.

It seems Zuckerberg is quite optimistic about Meta’s ability to excel in the AGI landscape, believing the company is well-positioned against its tech competitors. Insiders suggest that he intends to bring on board approximately 50 new hires for this Superintelligence team, most of whom he will actively recruit himself. Notably, AI founder Alexandr Wang mentioned that he plans to join Meta’s AGI team once his financial commitments with other start-ups are complete.

Earlier this year, Meta announced an impressive investment of up to $65 billion in AI for 2025, which includes establishing a significant data center. At that time, Zuckerberg asserted that their latest AI model, Llama 4, would serve as a pivotal point for their AI initiatives.

Bloomberg indicated that the push to recruit more AI experts can partly be attributed to Zuckerberg’s dissatisfaction with Llama 4’s recent performance. Interestingly, Meta is working on a flagship AI model called “Behemoth,” but its release has faced delays. The anticipated rollout was initially scheduled for April but has now been pushed back to later this fall due to ongoing concerns regarding improvements over earlier models and whether they truly justify public disclosure.

While Meta strives to catch up with tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Openai, its spending efforts seem to be bridging the gap. This investment frenzy is additional evidence of the competitive race among tech companies, with many, including Openai and Elon Musk’s Xai, chasing advancements in AGI.
