Maggie Sajak Breaks Down In Tears As She Interviews Her Father Pat About His ‘Wheel of Fortune’ Retirement On ‘GMA’

Pat Sajak’s election campaign Wheel of Fortune It ends this week. He’s been in the job since 1981, longer than many of his viewers have been alive. As his role as host drew to a close, he told his daughter: WheelWe spoke to society reporter Maggie Sajak about his plans for the future.

in Interview aired today upon Good morning, Americathe father-daughter duo discussed Pat’s departure from the game show, which was first announced in 2023. Maggie asked, “Why did you decide now was the right time to leave the show?”

Pat responded, “I always tell you, and I’m sure you’ve heard me say it a dozen times, that I would rather leave a few years early than leave a few years late.

“Can I still do it? Yes, I think for a while. I have other things in life that I want to do and I’m enjoying this last year,” he continued. “It’s been a great 40 years and I’m excited to see what’s next.”

He then joked: “I’m perfectly content just continuing to do crossword puzzles and play with my grandchildren. Hint, hint, hint. No pressure.”

A tearful Maggie spoke to her father about his impact on pop culture, saying, “This show means the world to us. It’s such an incredible gift. You took what should have been ‘Hangman’ and turned it into a cultural phenomenon. Thank you.”
