1 dead after small plane crashes along Westchester highway near county airport

A small plane crashed on a freeway in New York City's northern suburbs Thursday night, killing one person shortly after the pilot reported engine trouble, officials said.

The plane crashed into the median of Interstate 684 in Harrison near the Westchester County Airport around 7 p.m., New York State Police said.

Police said there were two people on board the plane, one of whom died.

No information was provided about the second occupant.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the pilot reported engine trouble in the single-engine TECNAM P2008 shortly before the crash.

The small aircraft departed from Linden Airport in New Jersey around 6:09 p.m. and was scheduled to land at Westchester County Airport at 6:45 p.m. According to Flightradar24the plane reached a maximum altitude of 3,150 feet before going into free fall.

An FAA spokesperson said the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate along with police.

Following the accident, the expressway was closed in both directions, causing significant traffic delays.
Police are asking drivers to avoid the area.

Exit 2 is the exit for the airport.
