The gunman, Mohammed Darduna, a Palestinian from the Gaza Strip who had lived in Judea and Samaria in recent years, was killed at the scene by armed civilians, according to Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gibr.
Initial reports said the shootings occurred at two locations on Highway 4 near Yavneh, between Ashdod and Tel Aviv.
Asta Medical Center said it was treating one person who was injured by a shattered car window in the shooting, and that two others also suffered minor injuries.
Magen David Adom and United Hazara Emergency Rescue Volunteers were at the scene of the attack and provided initial medical treatment to the injured.
Magen David Adom said the police officer was seriously injured at the Yavne interchange.
He was taken to Asta Hospital in Ashdod, where he was later pronounced dead.
Israeli police identified the victim as Sgt. Adil Kadosh from Tel Aviv. He was killed a month before his wedding.
“Adeel joined the police force in 2013 after serving in the border police,” police said in a statement.
Barricades were set up as police began searching the area to find additional injured people and further suspects.
The man who killed the terrorist was Magen David Adom, a volunteer who was driving through the area when the attack began. He got out of the car and immediately shot the terrorist dead.
“I was driving my car and noticed a person with a weapon standing on the road. At first I thought he was a police officer, but then he fired shots at me. “I ducked out of the car, pulled out a gun and shot him. I feel like I did my civic duty.”
