1 person dead, 1 in custody after Florida middle school shooting; police say

One person was killed in a shooting at a Marion County, Florida, middle school Wednesday night during a school awards ceremony, police said.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office officials said in a press release that the shooting occurred Wednesday evening at North Marion County Middle School in Citra, Florida, 30 miles south of Gainesville.

Authorities said the shooting happened shortly before 7 p.m.

The local sheriff’s office said the “shooting incident” occurred in the school parking lot just outside the school.

Police say one adult male shot and killed another adult male during an altercation in a parking lot. It is not clear at this time what exactly led to the shooting.

One adult male was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead, and a second adult male suspected of involvement in the incident was taken into custody.

The names of the victims and those detained were not immediately released.

Police said no students were injured, even though an awards ceremony was taking place at the middle school at the time of the shooting.
