1 worker dead, another injured after truck veers onto shoulder of CA highway

A box truck veered off the shoulder of a Southern California highway, killing one contractor and seriously injuring another, authorities said.

The accident occurred Monday morning as a cleaning crew of about seven Caltrans employees worked behind a guardrail along State Route 71 in Chino Hills, according to the California Highway Patrol. .

CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez said a Peterbilt box truck skidded over the workers’ parked van, crashing through a guardrail and hitting them.

A 54-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by the Chino Valley Fire Department. The second employee, a 36-year-old man, was hospitalized with serious injuries, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The 34-year-old driver of the box truck suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital. Jimenez said the driver, a Pomona resident, passed a breathalyzer test and was not impaired.

The man was not arrested. Investigators were trying to determine why he lost control on the highway about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

Two northbound lanes were closed until Monday afternoon.
