10 Dangerous Prisoners Escape from New Orleans Jail, Search for 9 Ongoing

Inmates Escape Orleans Parish Prison

Orleans Parish officials reported that 10 dangerous inmates broke out of the parish prison early Friday morning. By lunchtime, police had managed to apprehend one of them, but the remaining nine were still at large. Interestingly, another inmate was initially thought to be part of the escape but was later found in a different cell.

Sheriff Susan Hutson described the escape as involving possibly some internal complicity within the department. She expressed her serious concerns about the situation, labeling it both “very serious and unacceptable.”

During a press conference at 8:30 AM, Hutson detailed how the escape unfolded, explaining that the inmates managed to pull on the cell door and later breached a wall behind the prison toilet. She mentioned that prison staff were present at the time.

Surveillance footage confirmed that the prisoners exited the facility through loading dock doors and then made their way across the interstate after scaling the wall.

At some point, authorities realized that one of the initial escapees had actually relocated to another cell shortly before the prison lockdown occurred early that same day.

Reports indicated that the fugitives include individuals charged with serious offenses such as murder, robbery, and illegal weapon possession. The full list of those who escaped is as follows:

  • Antoine Massey – domestic abuse and theft
  • Renton Benren – illegal weapon transport
  • Leotate – robbery and illegal weapon transport
  • Kendel Miles – intentional cover-up of weapons
  • Derrick Groves – murder and attempted murder
  • Jermaine Donald – murder and aggravated battery
  • Corey Boyd – murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery
  • Gary Price – three counts of attempted murder
  • Robert Moody
  • Dkenan Dennis

Hutson criticized a flawed system that she believes contributed to this escape, suggesting that there might have been assistance from people within the prison itself. An internal investigation is currently underway to look into these claims.

The Louisiana Attorney General, Liz Maril, remarked that this situation indicates a serious oversight, emphasizing there is “no excuse for this.” Meanwhile, law enforcement continued their search for the remaining escapees, and one of them—Kendel Miles—was apprehended during a short pursuit on Royal Street.

The manhunt for the others continues across the state.
