A 10-Year-Old Girl Saves Her Family from House Fire
A young girl from California is being recognized as a hero after her quick actions helped save her family from a devastating house fire.
Elizabeth “Lizzie” Morgan, a 10-year-old from Oakley, California, woke her family up early Tuesday morning to alert them about a rapidly spreading fire. Fortunately, all seven family members—including four adults and three children—escaped without injury, though the fire claimed the lives of their pets.
The cause of the fire is still being determined; authorities suggest it may have originated in the porch area, according to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Jeff Burris. Investigators believe the fire broke out around 3 a.m., quickly escalating and damaging nearby power lines.
While everyone was asleep about 80 miles east of San Francisco, the power outage roused Lizzie, prompting her to wake her family. “Lizzie looked outside and saw the house on fire,” her mother, Nena Morgan, recounted, noting her daughter immediately began screaming.
Lizzie’s brother, Lucas, 11, joined in the chaos. “They started running through the house and woke everyone up,” their mother said. Unfortunately, nearly all of their belongings were lost in the fire.
In a tearful moment, Nena reflected on their losses: “It’s been 14 years. All the pictures are gone—kids’ school pictures, baby pictures, wedding memories.”
First responders faced challenges, with downed power lines and a fully engulfed attic complicating their rescue efforts.
Nena expressed her gratitude: “When I woke up, I saw smoke filling the house. My husband and I were asleep, and I don’t know what could have happened if Elizabeth hadn’t woken up.”
The family is left wondering about the fire’s origin, especially since there were previous incidents in the neighborhood, including a fire in their backyard just two weeks prior. “No one knows why my backyard caught fire in the middle of the day,” she mentioned, adding, “We could have all died last night. We’re grateful to Elizabeth and Lucas. The kids are our heroes now.”
Chief Bliss stated that the fire is currently under investigation by local fire authorities.
