11-foot alligator seized from pool at upstate New York home

A sick alligator has been seized from a home in upstate New York where it had been illegally kept, state officials said.

Conservation Police seized a 750-pound, 11-foot-long alligator Wednesday from a Hamburg home south of Buffalo.

The state Department of Environmental Protection said the homeowner built an addition and installed an in-ground pool for the 30-year-old alligator and allowed people to enter the water and pet it.

The crocodile has health problems including “blindness in both eyes” and spinal complications. The reptile was placed with a licensed caretaker until it can be found in permanent care, the agency said in a statement.

The owner’s state license to keep alligators expires in 2021.

State environmental officials have not decided whether to press charges.
