The U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday indicted Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar on terrorism charges along with six other members of the terrorist organization, nearly 11 months after Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel.
Three of the terrorists named in the indictment are already dead, having been killed by Israel: former Hamas political leaders Ismail Haniyeh, Mohammed al-Masri (also known as Mohammed Deif), and Marwan Issa. The survivors are Sinwar, Hamas external leader Khaled Meshaal, and foreign affairs chief Ali Baraka.
Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the charges on Tuesday.
Department of Justice said press release:
The Department of Justice today announced the unsealing of terrorism, murder conspiracy, and sanctions evasion charges against six senior members of the designated foreign terrorist organization Hamas. The charges relate to the defendants' central role in planning, supporting, and executing the terrorist act committed by Hamas in Israel on October 7, 2023 (the October 7 Hamas Massacre). This terrorist act included the murder and kidnapping of countless innocent civilians, including American citizens, and was the culmination of Hamas' decades-long campaign of terror and violence against Israel and its allies, including American citizens. The defendants are either deceased or at large.
“The Department of Justice has indicted Yahya Sinwar and other senior Hamas leaders for financing, directing, and overseeing a decades-long campaign that killed American citizens and endangered our national security,” Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in a statement on October 7.Number“Hamas terrorists, led by these defendants, have killed approximately 1,200 people, including more than 40 Americans, and kidnapped hundreds of civilians. This weekend, we learned that Hamas killed six people it had kidnapped and held captive for nearly a year, including Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg Pollin, 23. We are investigating Hersh's murder, and all other brutal killings of Americans by Hamas, as acts of terrorism. The charges announced today are only part of our efforts to target all aspects of Hamas' operations. These actions will not be our last.”
