Update on Sophia Fortus Following Church Shooting

Sophia Fortus, a 12-year-old who was shot in the head during a tragic shooting at a Catholic Church in Minneapolis on August 27, is making a steady recovery. Her family, through Hennepin Healthcare, shared an encouraging update on Monday.

“Sophia is winning!” her family expressed, adding that they are grateful for the prayers and support from people worldwide.

The family remarked, “We’re humbled by the many individuals who have lifted her in prayer, including Bartholomew, the orthodox patriarch, and Pope Leo XIV.” They believe that Sophia’s survival from this terrifying event was a miracle, and they continue to witness remarkable healing.

In a statement reflecting their ongoing ordeal, they said, “Every day, we will keep her alive and reveal new moments that helped her recover. God has wrapped Sophia in a healing embrace.”

Father Timothy, a distinguished member of the St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church, underwent surgery shortly after suffering severe injuries during the shooting.

Dr. Walt Galcich, the neurosurgeon treating Sophia, noted that the bullet caused significant damage to her head. According to the latest family update, she is showing signs of neurological recovery and moving forward steadily.

Medical personnel are cautiously optimistic as they prepare to transition her from acute care to an inpatient rehabilitation program. Her family emphasized, “It’s a long road ahead filled with extensive treatments, but her resilience inspires hope at every step.” They also urged continued prayers for her healing journey.

The Forchas family expressed deep appreciation for the dedicated staff at Hennepin Healthcare, noting how crucial their support has been during this challenging time. They extended gratitude to their broader community and friends who have become “Sofia’s prayer warriors” and encouraged everyone to keep praying for peace and healing.

Notably, during the shooting, Sophia’s younger brother was present at school but fortunately wasn’t harmed. Sophia’s mother, a pediatric emergency nurse, was working at Hennepin Healthcare, where she learned her daughter was among the injured.

On the morning of the incident, the shooter, Robin Westman, opened fire in the church, causing chaos as people sought safety amidst the horror. The attack left two children dead and injured 18 others, with 15 requiring medical attention.
