The Arizona Supreme Court shocked the political world Tuesday by upholding an 1864 law that bans nearly all abortions with few exceptions.
What are the few exceptions to the abortion ban?: To save a pregnant person’s life — which means rape and incest don’t count as valid exceptions.
Penalties for abortion: Anyone who performs or assists a pregnant person in obtaining an abortion may be sentenced to two to five years in prison.
What happened now?: The ban will take effect 14 days after the verdict. The court also sent the case back to a lower court to sort out the law’s constitutionality. An effort to put abortion rights on the ballot in the Copper State has been signed by more than 500,000 Arizonans. According to KJZZ.
