MOSCOW (AP) — At least 13 miners are trapped in a collapsed gold mine in Russia’s Far East, regional officials said Tuesday.
According to Amur regional authorities, part of the mine collapsed in the Zeysk district. The Ministry of Emergencies reported that 13 miners were trapped, while the District Attorney’s Office announced that up to 15 may remain underground.
Rescue operations have begun. Russian media said emergency responders were trying to reach the miners trapped at a depth of 125 meters (410 feet) through a ventilation shaft.
Authorities did not immediately say what caused the accident. Most mining accidents in the past were caused by violations of safety rules.
