13-year-old girl fatally shot in Iowa, 12-year-old boy in custody

A 13-year-old girl was shot and killed in rural Iowa, and a 12-year-old boy was taken into custody.

Just before 5:30 a.m. Sunday, someone called 911 to report a shooting in the town of Eldora, about 80 miles northeast of Des Moines, according to the Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The girl was found at her home.

Crime in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Davenport

A 12-year-old boy is in custody on suspicion of killing a 13-year-old girl in Iowa.

The names of the murdered girl and the detained boy have not been released. The circumstances leading up to the shooting have not been disclosed. DCI is investigating.

South Hardin Schools Superintendent Adam Zellmer said in an email to the community that the district is “disturbed” by the death.
