13-year-old stomps on opponent’s head during AAU basketball game; police investigating

Police are investigating after a 13-year-old male stomped on an opponent’s head during an Amateur Athletic Union basketball game over the weekend in Northern California. You can see a video report of the incident here, including a cell phone clip of the head stomping. here.

The video shows a Payton’s Place player running into the scrum and stomping on a Tumakubo United player’s head with his right foot.

“He was on the floor and this kid came and stomped on his head,” Eva Gingabu told KGO about what happened to her son.

A police video report showed an image of what appears to be the side of the son’s head after being stomped, which was covered in red marks.

“You could clearly see the size of the shoes on my son’s face,” Gingabu told KGO. “He [a] The first concussion [since] He was playing basketball.” Gingabu and her husband told the station their son was being treated for a concussion and was suffering from headaches.

But the family of the player who was stomped on told KGO that the player was just standing up for a teammate who he felt had been kicked and punched. Video shows the victim raising his right leg toward the player who was going for the ball before being stomped on.

KGO reported that after the incident, organizers told the Peyton’s Place players to leave the gym and they complied, and that the families claim adults were cyberbullying the Peyton’s Place players.

The team at Peyton’s Place told the station the boy who committed the stomping act is “seeking help to manage his emotions and is not playing in the program at this time.”

On Monday, Peyton’s Place noted: Instagram“Video footage has circulated from our team’s game last weekend. Unfortunately, the footage does not portray our team or our values ​​in a positive light. The behavior exhibited by our players is unacceptable and is taken seriously. We do not tolerate violence. Our players are expected to conduct themselves with integrity on and off the court. Both teams are currently working together to resolve this issue.”

Police said the Gingabu brothers filed a report and an investigation is ongoing, according to KGO. Alameda police told KTVU that the report identified two 13-year-old players, but added that police don’t have any further information because both involved are minors.

“I think everybody was in shock,” Tumakubo United coach Michael Tolentino told KGO. “Everybody came out on the court and [and] I went up to the coach of the other team and said, ‘Hey, what just happened? … What’s going on?’

As for the player who stomped on her son’s head, Gingabu added to KGO, “If I don’t say anything now, this kid is going to think it’s okay to do that because he’s still young. He’s going to think it’s okay to run away from the situation like he did.”

KGO added that there are questions about a possible assault involving parents or officials that took place after the stomping incident, but none is seen on the video and police have no record of the incident.

KGO also noted that coaches suggested the players have played against each other many times over the years and that race was not a factor in Sunday’s incident. Tumakubo United is a Filipino basketball program with a Northern California chapter, according to KTVU.
