Rescue Teams Save 14 from Flooded Caves in Alabama

Rescue efforts in northern Alabama were successful in saving a total of 14 individuals from flooded caves during two separate incidents that occurred on Sunday. Authorities declared a flash flood emergency in Jackson County amid severe weather conditions.

Heavy rainfall, attributed to moisture from the Gulf, swept through parts of the central United States over the weekend.

The National Weather Service in Huntsville issued the flood emergency after reporting rainfall totals of 5 to 9 inches in regions of Jackson and Madison counties.

Just before 3 p.m. local time, rescue teams were alerted to an emergency situation involving a stranded person at Mother’s Finest Cave near Stevenson, Alabama. According to the Jackson County Emergency Management Agency, it took nearly an hour for rescuers to reach the cave by boat.

The Huntsville Cave Rescue Team managed to successfully free the stranded individual without any injuries occurring. Shortly after, around 3:30 p.m., another call was received regarding a rescue needed at Tumbling Rock Cave near Fackler, about 40 miles from the first incident.

Local first responders faced challenges navigating flooded roads, leading them to call for help from surrounding agencies.

Hollywood police swiftly rescued five individuals before additional backup arrived, while rapid water and cave rescue teams managed to extricate the remaining eight individuals who were trapped.

Fortunately, all individuals involved were unharmed.

The Emergency Management Agency cautioned that cave and stream areas are particularly vulnerable to flooding during heavy downpours.

More than 6 inches of rain fell in Skyline, Alabama, with reports indicating over 9 inches in Hazelgreen, underscoring the severity of the weather conditions.

First responders in the Huntsville area also conducted numerous water rescues for motorists caught on inundated roads.
