An Alabama lawyer, facing attempted murder charges for allegedly poisoning her disabled husband with fentanyl, is now under scrutiny for another alleged incident while out on bail.
Sarah Baker, a former attorney from Cullman, is said to have provided her husband’s caregivers with an old prescription bottle containing 12.2 grams of a purple powder thought to be fentanyl during a visit on July 11. Reports indicate that her husband, James “Doyle” Baker, has been homebound and requires medical assistance after suffering a stroke in 2022.
During a previous visit on June 19, Baker reportedly requested an empty pill bottle from one of the nurses. She later returned with a bag that appeared to hold the old prescription bottle, asking the caregiver to store it in a safe location in the garage. This act raised suspicions, prompting the caregiver to alert the police, who then conducted a search and found a bottle containing a purple substance.
Cullman police tested the substance, which returned positive results for fentanyl, as confirmed by lead investigator Zachary Latham in court.
Authorities apprehended Sarah Baker at her Mountain Brook home on July 11 and booked her into a rural jail after a judge denied her bail request. Circuit Judge Gregory Williams expressed concerns regarding public safety, stating that Baker had committed a new offense by transporting and storing a significant amount of fentanyl at her husband’s home.
Previously, Baker was arrested in November after being suspected of attempting to poison her husband over several days, using the synthetic opioid. She faces multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and several counts of attempted murder. After her initial arrest, she was released on a $400,000 bond, with conditions barring any contact with her husband.
Despite her legal troubles, Baker reportedly intends to continue visiting her home to manage medical care for her husband. Interestingly, her social media pages are filled with political posts, often critical of Republicans, which adds an unusual layer to this case.
Her husband testified that Baker had adhered to the conditions of her bail and had not contacted him since her initial arrest, but the circumstances surrounding her alleged actions paint a troubling picture.
