Charges Filed in Fatal Hit-and-Run Involving 14-Year-Old
Fox News has reported that the individual charged in connection with the death of a 14-year-old student in Southern California, who was killed in a hit-and-run while riding his bike, is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. This man had previously been arrested twice for drunk driving but remained in the U.S. due to the current immigration policies under the Biden administration.
Jose Abelardo Villegas Orbe, aged 47, faces charges of manslaughter while intoxicated and hit-and-run stemming from the incident.
Liam Cantu, a freshman at La Quinta High School, was biking with another teen on October 10 when the tragic accident occurred. He succumbed to his injuries and passed away in the hospital on October 24, as confirmed by officials at the school.
Another boy involved was hospitalized but has since been released, according to local news sources.
Recent trends show a rise in incidents tied to illegal immigration, prompting arrests across the country.
In the months leading up to the accident, Villegas-Orbe was arrested in Riverside County for DUI charges, once in August and again in November of the previous year. However, these misdemeanor charges did not meet the criteria for deportation as outlined by current immigration priorities.
Currently, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is requesting that local authorities detain him in light of the recent fatal hit-and-run.
According to California’s sanctuary state law, even if released on bail, Villegas-Orbe would likely not be required to cooperate with ICE.
La Quinta High School has shared its condolences, remembering Liam for his infectious smile and positive energy, stating, “His spirit will forever be part of our school family.”
