Bravery Shines in Michigan Church Shooting

A 14-year-old boy is being recognized for his courage after he saved his younger brother during a tragic church shooting in Michigan.

Jasper was assisting with the Sunday service at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc when he abruptly left his post—reportedly to grab tissues for a runny nose. It was during this brief moment that chaos would unfold.

“It was just so sudden,” his aunt, Amber Rosen, shared. “Jasper wasn’t feeling unwell, but he felt he needed to slip out, just for a moment.”

Shortly afterward, a gunman named Thomas Jacob Sanford drove a Chevrolet Silverado through the very doors Jasper had just vacated.

“If he hadn’t had to blow his nose, Jasper might have been right in the shooter’s line of sight,” Rosen noted somberly.

At that moment, Jasper’s mother and siblings were seated towards the back of the chapel. Amid the chaos, Jasper sprinted to shield his two younger brothers, aged 8 and 10.

“He rushed over to grab them,” said Rosen. “In the fray, his sister Josie was taken by another family member as they tried to escape.”

Over 100 worshippers were caught up in the panic, desperately trying to flee.

Jasper’s quick thinking led him to guide his mother and brothers towards the back exit, but they soon found the door blocked. In a split-second decision, Jasper slammed his elbow against the glass several times to clear a path. They finally made it out and headed to the parking lot, where Jasper managed to flag down a passing car, ensuring his brothers were safe.

However, as gunfire erupted between the police and the shooter, worry set in for Jasper and his mother, especially regarding 11-year-old Josie. She was later found hiding in the woods, clutching a church hymn.

“It was terrifying. The trauma runs deep. Children shouldn’t have to endure situations like this,” Rosen reflected. “No one should experience such violence.”

Once reunited with Josie, the relief was palpable, and Rosen could only express gratitude, saying, “I believe the angels were there with them.”

Following the terrifying incident, Rosen plans to visit Michigan to support her sister and family. “All we want right now is to be together, wrapped in a blanket, watching movies, healing,” she admitted, emphasizing how challenging this experience has been for them all.

Sanford, who had a background in the US Marine Corps, was killed in a shootout with law enforcement responding to the incident. The police arrived within about 30 seconds, and the shooter was neutralized roughly eight minutes later.

Around 10:25 am, Sanford had approached the church, two large American flags displayed on his vehicle alongside deer antlers. After opening fire with an assault rifle, he set the church ablaze, resulting in a devastating loss of life. Two victims were killed, with two others found dead in the burned church. The victims included a father and husband, a veteran, and a six-year-old girl with her parents.
