140+ House Democrats Demand Ability to Put Veterans on NICS Gun Ban

More than 140 House Democrats are calling for the addition of authority to the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act to prohibit veterans from purchasing and owning firearms under certain circumstances.

For decades, the Veterans Administration has reported veterans’ mental health issues to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), and such issues require trustees to administer veterans’ benefits. It includes using. But earlier this year, the Clinton-area gun ban was repealed in the Senate by an amendment introduced by Sen. John Kennedy (R-Louisiana).

After the adoption of the amendment, Kennedy Said“Unelected officials should not be able to unilaterally strip veterans of their Second Amendment rights. By passing my amendment today, the Senate We did the right thing for all Americans who love .”

House Democrats are crying out injustice and demanding a gun ban be included in the spending bill.

The letter, led by Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), reads in part:

The Kennedy amendment repeals 30 years of common-sense precedent and practice that ensures that veterans deemed “mentally incompetent” are added to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). The current process that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) uses to make competency determinations as required by law includes an opportunity for appeal and allows veterans who are a danger to themselves or others to , which helps ensure that background check systems flag the following cases: Try buying a firearm.

Thompson and other Democrats continue to argue that the gun ban is a way to “protect our veterans.” Additionally, they are asking the VA to use various state red flag laws as a means to report veterans under certain circumstances.
