Late Sunday night in Buenos Aires, authorities arrested at least 15 individuals after unrest broke out following Argentina’s loss in the FIFA World Cup final.
Local news sources reported that the disturbances began around midnight at the Obelisk, a central square known for hosting celebrations after the national soccer team’s victories.
Despite being the reigning champions of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Argentina fell to Spain in the 2026 final, with Ferran Torres scoring a decisive goal in the 106th minute, leading to a tense 1-0 victory.
According to infobae, on that Sunday night, fans, including families and children, gathered peacefully at the Obelisk to support the national team shortly after the final.
However, tensions escalated just before midnight when some individuals began hurling objects at the police and trying to breach security lines, resulting in significant clashes. Reportedly, rioters threw glass bottles and other items, prompting the police to use tear gas and water cannons to restore order.
Police actions not only subdued the riot but also ended the peaceful gathering within roughly 20 minutes. Footage of the chaos was shared widely on local news and social media.
As of early Monday, 15 arrests had been confirmed, although many rioters had reportedly managed to escape. Reports noted that several police officers were injured during the confrontations, with some civilians hurt as well, including one man who was kicked in the face by a fleeing participant.
Prior to the unrest, the mood at the Obelisk was described as a mix of “sadness and pride” in light of Argentina’s defeat. Fans paid homage to Lionel Messi, singing along and visibly upset about the loss at MetLife Stadium, according to Todo Noticias.
In addition to the main gathering at the Obelisk, other areas in Buenos Aires saw similar gatherings, though no violence was reported in those locations up to that point.
