Suffolk County Man Charged After Brawl at Basketball Game
A man from Suffolk County has been accused of taking part in a fight during a high school basketball match. This incident unfolded just before the conclusion of the game between Half Hollow Hills West High School and Comsewogue.
As tensions rose, a physical altercation erupted among the players, prompting a spectator to run onto the court and allegedly hit a 15-year-old player from Comsewogue. The individual in question, Jeffrey Barnot, who is 36 years old, is facing charges of third-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
A video captured the chaotic scene, showing players pushing and shoving one another while a referee tried to regain control. Coaches and other spectators rushed towards the fracas, and it seemed Barnot was engaging with one of the Comsewogue players, who later appeared to be hurt.
This altercation took place with only 44 seconds remaining in the game, which was already leaning in favor of Half Hollow Hills West, 63-52. Following the fight, the game was called off, and both teams left the gym prematurely.
Barnot has been issued a court summons and is expected to appear before a judge on the 30th of January.
In response to the unrest, the Comsewogue School District expressed its regret over the situation, while the Half Hollow Hills Central School District condemned the violence and pledged to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation by Suffolk Police.
School principal John O’Farrell remarked that they are committed to taking necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Additionally, a new policy stipulates that players who leave the bench during fights will face a two-game suspension.
