An illegal immigrant from Mexico who has been deported from the United States 16 times was sentenced to just one year in prison for causing the crash that killed 64-year-old Scott Miller in Conifer, Colorado.
In June, 47-year-old Ignacio Cruz Mendoza was arrested on a vehicular homicide charge in connection with the crash that killed Miller, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office. Submitted Illegal immigrants are only charged with misdemeanor traffic violations.
Before prosecutors could file felony charges, Cruz Mendoza pleaded guilty to a traffic offense the following month, meaning he would receive just a year in prison for Miller's murder.
“I'm angry because this man only gets a year for murdering my husband and the prosecutor refuses to charge him with anything more,” Dean Miller said. said Local media.
According to Colorado State Police, Cruz Mendoza was driving a large truck for Monique Trucking, based in Indio, California, on Highway 285 near Conifer when the vehicle went off the road, spilling pipes and angle iron it was carrying onto five cars in its path.
Miller, a passenger in one of the cars, died at the scene, and the driver of the other car was seriously injured.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Officer Confirmed Cruz Mendoza is an illegal immigrant who has been deported from the United States to Mexico a total of 16 times over the past 20 years.
Cruz Mendoza was first deported in May 2002 after being arrested the previous month in Oregon on local charges. Since then, he has been deported and repeatedly returned to the United States, presumably through the porous southern border.
ICE officials have issued a detention order for Cruz-Mendoza, requesting that he be held upon his release from the Jefferson County Jail.
