Teen Pleads Guilty in Fatal School Shooting
WINDER, Ga. – A 16-year-old boy has admitted guilt to all 55 charges related to a deadly shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia, an incident that occurred nearly two years ago.
Colt Gray entered his plea on Friday after failing to negotiate a deal with prosecutors. Previously, he had pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the September 4, 2024 shooting, which resulted in the deaths of two students and two teachers, along with injuries to several others at the school situated about 45 miles northeast of Atlanta.
Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm is set to hear case summaries and sentencing recommendations from both prosecution and defense before determining the sentence.
Gray’s trial was scheduled for mid-October in Columbia County, roughly 100 miles from where the shooting occurred, after a change of venue was granted by the court.
In March, a jury found Gray’s father, Colin Gray, guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter. Sentencing for him is anticipated next week.
Prosecutors allege that Colin Gray provided his son with the assault-style rifle used in the fatal shooting. The victims included teachers Richard “Ricky” Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimy, 53, as well as students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both aged 14. Additionally, another teacher and eight other students were injured, seven from gunfire.
In legal terms, a non-negotiated plea indicates that there hasn’t been an agreement on sentencing between the state and the defense, meaning the judge has complete discretion in sentencing.
During the hearing, prosecutors intended to present testimonies from teenage victims and witnesses, alongside sharing surveillance footage and crime scene images. They also mentioned that various records—including 911 calls and Gray’s school, medical, and social media history—might be introduced in court.
Gray’s defense attorney indicated plans to call upon a psychologist, a juvenile detention center counselor, and his grandmother to testify.
Colt Gray, who was only 14 at the time of the incident, faces 55 charges as an adult, including murder and 25 counts of aggravated assault. Authorities revealed that he brought the rifle to school concealed in poster board, emerging from the bathroom to open fire in classrooms and hallways.
Investigations pointed out that this attack seemed premeditated. Gray had reportedly left behind a notebook with detailed plans for the shooting, estimating he could potentially kill up to 26 individuals and injure others.
Before the incident, there was worsening concern about Colt Gray’s mental state. His father had recognized signs of his son’s deteriorating condition in the weeks leading up to the shooting but failed to pursue help. Meanwhile, Colt’s estranged mother repeatedly advised Colin Gray to secure his firearms and limit access.
Instead, records indicate that Colin Gray continued to purchase ammunition and related accessories for his son.
