16-year-old boy takes his own life after accidentally shooting his close friend: 'So overwhelmed with guilt'

A tragedy unfolded in upstate New York when a boy accidentally shot his best friend and subsequently took his own life due to guilt. The families of the two close friends are planning to bury them together, as they were described as “inseparable.”

Last Wednesday night, Damarion Jones, 16, fatally shot 13-year-old Jonah Tanner in a home on Lincoln Avenue in Syracuse. Reports indicate that Jones, overwhelmed by grief after the incident, directed the firearm at himself. He ended up dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, while Tanner succumbed to injuries later declared brain dead at a hospital.

Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick remarked that it seemed Jones acted out of guilt, stating, “It appears he committed suicide in a fit of guilt.” Details surrounding the shooting and how the boys accessed the firearm remain unclear.

To assist with Tanner’s funeral costs, an online fundraiser has been launched, highlighting their close bond. The campaign emphasized that their friendship was filled with joy and love, reflecting a truly special connection.

Simultaneously, another fundraiser for Jones mentioned that the boys would “sleep together,” as that’s what they would have wanted. Jones’ mother expressed her heartbreak, recalling her son as a caring young man who brought joy and laughter into her life.

She noted, “They were always together, sharing a brotherly bond. Unable to cope with the tragic loss of his best friend, Damarion couldn’t bear the pain, and we lost him too.”

A wake was recently held to remember them, where Jones’ mother shared his moving last words to her: “I love you.” This statement has left a deep imprint on her heart.
