Teenager Accused of Killing Elderly Couple Knew Them Well

A Mississippi teenager is facing serious charges related to the deaths of an elderly couple he reportedly knew. According to recent court testimony, 17-year-old Cordarius Hobbs was familiar with 74-year-old Billy Blair and his 71-year-old wife, Virginia Carol Blair, before the tragic incident during a home invasion on June 3 in Mendenhall.

During a preliminary hearing, Hobbs’ family testified that he had previously worked for the Blairs, performing tasks like cleaning around their house. Hobbs’ grandfather, Billy Newsome, expressed his belief in his grandson’s innocence, raising questions about the logic of robbing someone you were close to. “Why would you go and rob the guy you work for?” Newsome asked. The circumstances of the case, he argued, just don’t seem to add up.

On the day of the incident, three contractors working at the Blairs’ home noticed that the door of Carol Blair’s car was open with several firearms on the seat. They called the Simpson County Sheriff’s Department for a welfare check, which took place around 11:30 a.m. Officers arrived shortly before noon, and the situation escalated to a standoff lasting nearly two hours after shots were fired. Hobbs was later captured while attempting to flee, and he was reportedly unarmed at the time.

Their bodies were discovered in disturbing conditions—Carol in a fetal position in her bedroom, having sustained three gunshot wounds to the back of the head, while Bill was found in the kitchen, also suffering from three gunshot wounds, this time to the face. Investigators later discovered three firearms along with 280 shell casings in the house, all belonging to Bill Blair.

Hobbs’ attorney, Zachary Voe, contended that there was insufficient forensic evidence tying Hobbs directly to the murders. He pointed out anomalies, such as the sequence of the gunshots, suggesting that it was possible another person may have been involved. “There’s a lot to think about, but it’s just a huge amount,” he said, noting the lack of a clear identification of suspects at the time of the shooting.

Facing two counts of first-degree murder along with robbery and several other charges, Hobbs has been denied bail. The couple’s family expressed their heartache and solidarity through a Facebook statement, saying, “We are devastated, hurt, and heartbroken, but we are not alone.”

Jason Buzbee, a friend of the couple, shared his memories of them being incredibly generous, remarking, “They were all good people. This is just a tragedy.” The community feels the shock of the loss deeply as they process this heartbreaking event.
