High School Lacrosse Player Dies After Injury

A tragic incident occurred this week when a high school lacrosse player from Ohio lost his life at just 16 years old due to a serious injury sustained during a game.

Dylan Beserick, a sophomore at Bay Village High School, passed away on Thursday after sustaining a blow to the head during a match two days earlier. The injury happened when a shot from an opposing player struck him in the back of the head, just beneath his helmet. Although he underwent surgery on Wednesday, it sadly wasn’t enough to save him.

The community has reacted with an outpouring of support. A family statement expressed gratitude for the kindness shown, asking for continued thoughts and prayers during this challenging time. Bay Village School Principal Scott Place also shared his grief, describing Dylan as a dedicated athlete and student, highlighting the profound impact of his loss. Counseling services have been made available at the school for students and families affected by this tragedy.

A fundraising effort in Dylan’s honor has remarkably raised over $80,000, far surpassing its initial goal of $500. Reports indicate that the community is embracing the memory of Dylan, with lacrosse sticks and soccer balls adorning porches and lawns in tribute.

Matt Spellman, the athletic director at Bay Village School, remembered Dylan fondly, noting his cheerful demeanor and strong support for teammates. He described him as kind, hardworking, and always a leader, exhibiting empathy both on the field and in the classroom. Dylan, who was captain of the team, had played 25 games during his high school career—this was his second season on the varsity team.

On the day of his passing, the team canceled their scheduled game to hold a prayer service in Dylan’s memory, with their next match planned for Tuesday.
