16-Year-Old Lifeguard Saves Child from Huge Waves at California Beach

Brave Lifeguard Rescues Boy at Sea Bright Beach

A 16-year-old lifeguard from Santa Cruz, California, is being commended for his quick actions during a tense situation that could have ended badly for a child.

This alarming incident took place at Sea Bright Beach when the lifeguard, known as Ryder, noticed a 10-year-old boy who had been carried away by a wave and was in distress. Video footage of the event shows Ryder struggling against numerous waves while holding the boy firmly.

In a particularly intense moment, as a large wave approached, Ryder positioned himself to shield the child. After what felt like forever, both of them resurfaced from the water. Nearby beachgoers quickly jumped in to assist as another wave came crashing in.

Ryder managed to keep the child afloat, but they were ultimately both covered by another wave. It wasn’t long before additional help arrived, likely from another lifeguard and several men at the beach, who brought the boy to safety.

Witness Scott Vander Dussen captured the moment on video and reflected on it, saying he had never witnessed such a dramatic rescue. “I really didn’t know what to expect as it all unfolded,” he mentioned in an interview, noting that he missed capturing the initial rescue attempt.

Vander Dussen described the wave conditions as typically strong, and the sudden change caught many off guard. “It’s unfortunate how quickly the situation escalated. Thankfully, the lifeguards were there, or it might have ended differently,” he remarked, adding that paramedics evaluated the child before his parents took him home.

Ryder’s mother expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support directed toward her son. “It truly warms my heart to see so much kindness. Many have inquired about a GoFundMe, but honestly, he was just doing a job he loves,” she shared.

According to the American Red Cross, lifeguards undergo rigorous training not just in swimming but also in water rescue and first aid, preparing them for high-pressure situations like this one.
