Taylor Sterling is a 16-year-old high school runner attending Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, California. Despite her rigorous training and dedication, last October, Sterling lost her position on the Varsity Cross Country Team to a trans athlete.
Sterling eventually regained her spot on the team by outperforming her male competitors, but the controversy is still on fire.
Shortly after her evacuation, Sterling, along with another teammate, filed a federal lawsuit against the Riverside Unified School District in November 2024, alleging a violation of Title IX.
The scandal escalated when Sterling and another teammate practiced wearing a “Save Girls ‘Sports” t-shirt. School officials reportedly compared the slogan to Swastikas, claiming that the girl created a hostile environment. Apparently the athletic director was demanding that the shirt be removed and disciplined.
Last month, Sterling spoke to the California Legislature in support of a bill banning transgender athletes in women’s sports. The Democratic majority rejected them. However, there is still hope for Sterling to win her case, which has a court date of May 15, 2025.
Pat Gray is performing a clip of Sterling’s speech to the California Legislature.

“My name is Taylor Sterling. I’m 16 years old and attended Martin Luther King High School. I’m a 4.0 GPA and lead junior class vice president, national women’s charity league volunteer and captain of the school’s cross-country and track and field team,” she began. “I was taken away from the Varsity Girls team and replaced by a newly qualified male transfer student who received favorable treatment.”
Sterling continued to explain the time and dedication she spent training for her varsity position.[working] Every day during the summer” and “I wake up at 5am to attend morning practice and stay at school until 4:45am every day.”
Sterling also described the double standards she witnessed. “He didn’t have to attend practice while my team and I ran seven miles a day together.”
“Our athletic director made me delete [Save Girls’ Sports] I told the shirt and me that it was like wearing a sw before a Jew and that if I put it on again I would face disciplinary action,” she continued. Why is it said that we must sit and be quiet?
“Wow, it’s good,” Pat says.
