Human Smuggling Arrest in Arizona
On Wednesday, authorities arrested a man on charges of human smuggling after 17 undocumented immigrants were found packed into an RV and a nearby sedan during the oppressive Arizona heat.
Most of the migrants, who were all from Mexico, were discovered in cramped and unventilated RVs on a property in Nogales, as temperatures soared. McGoffin noted that the conditions inside the RV, which lacked running water and proper air circulation, were anything but humane. The remaining individuals were located in a small sedan that was later stopped by the authorities.
“This rescue likely prevented a tragedy,” McGoffin remarked. “With summer temperatures on the rise, cramming people into vehicles without ventilation or water is a recipe for disaster. Human life should never be treated as cargo.”
All migrants are now safe and will undergo processing as per U.S. immigration laws. According to McGoffin, the individuals rescued will be processed for rapid removal.
The man arrested was a U.S. citizen who initially attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended shortly after by a border agent.
Investigations are currently underway to explore if there are others involved in this smuggling operation. This effort was conducted by the Nogales Border Patrol, the local police department, and Homeland Security.
McGoffin emphasized the grim reality many undocumented immigrants face at the hands of smugglers, saying, “There was no recreational experience in that vehicle. It was simply being used for smuggling purposes. People were forced to endure extreme heat and live in inhumane conditions.” While thankfully no one was seriously hurt, the situation underscores the dangers faced by those reliant on smugglers for passage.
