18 Detained at Microsoft Headquarters During Employee-Led Protest Against Israel

Protests in Redmond Lead to Arrests Over Microsoft Contract with Israel

At least 18 individuals were detained in Redmond, Washington, during a demonstration led by employees against a significant technology contract that Microsoft has with Israel.

On Wednesday, a group of anti-Israel protesters, who called themselves “there is no apartheid azure,” gathered at Microsoft’s headquarters around noon. This group included both current and former employees of the company. They accused Microsoft of providing artificial intelligence technology to Israeli forces, claiming this technology is used to “study, starve and kill Palestinians.”

The Redmond Police Department reported that officials initially attempted to convince the protesters to leave the company’s private property. However, the situation escalated as the protesters resisted and became “aggressive.” Reports indicated that some demonstrators vandalized Microsoft signs with red paint, obstructed pedestrian walkways, and set up barriers using tables and chairs from nearby farmers markets.

In response, Microsoft stated its commitment to upholding human rights standards and contractual obligations, including those related to the Middle East. The company also announced last week that it is conducting an independent review of the recent allegations concerning its Azure platform’s application in Israel. They emphasized that they are taking ongoing steps to uphold human rights standards and address any illegal actions that disrupt business or endanger individuals.

This protest followed a similar gathering on Tuesday, where approximately 35 demonstrators were present at the Microsoft campus. They safely dispersed after police informed them that they were protesting on private property, which did not allow such activities. However, the protests on Wednesday turned more violent, leading to vandalism and property damage.

Tensions between some Microsoft employees and the company have increased in recent months. Back in May, one employee was terminated for interrupting a speech by CEO Satya Nadella in protest of the contract. Other protests had occurred in April during the company’s 50th anniversary ceremony.

The 18 individuals arrested on Wednesday may face charges such as trespassing, malicious mischief, and obstruction of justice. Thankfully, no injuries were reported during the protest.

Microsoft is now among several tech giants facing pushback from employees regarding contracts with Israel. Last year, various protests by Google employees were reported in response to similar contracts.

The protests were organized by a group concerned about what they termed “apartheid,” and they made demands to halt business engagements with Israel, particularly regarding a $1.2 billion contract known as Project Nimbus, signed in 2021.
