73-Year-Old Artist Murdered in Capitola Mall
A 73-year-old artist met a tragic end on Monday in broad daylight outside a shopping mall in Capitola, California.
The victim, Rachel Summers, operated an art gallery within Capitola Mall and had no previous ties to the alleged assailant, 19-year-old Tyler Liebert.
This violent event unfolded just before 1 p.m.
“Our thoughts are with Rachel’s family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic and senseless act of violence,” stated the Capitola Police in a recent announcement.
Authorities indicated that they believe this was a random act, noting there was no evidence suggesting that the suspect knew Summers prior to the incident. The Capitola Police Department is collaborating with various local agencies to thoroughly investigate the scene.
At the time of the attack, Summers was reportedly en route to the bank to make a deposit. Documents from the court reveal that when Liebert was apprehended, he admitted to having “fantasies” of murder for some time. Astonishingly, he had shared these thoughts but was not kept in custody.
The suspect expressed a need to kill and decided to travel to the mall, where he bought a switchblade from a sporting goods store, intending to use it with both hands in a potential attack.
Interestingly, he had considered targeting multiple individuals before he set his sights on Summers, who was approaching him from behind. According to court reports, she was stabbed 11 times, suffering from defensive wounds as well.
After the attack, Liebert left the scene, went to a gas station to buy a drink, and then called the police to report the incident, where he also confessed to the crime.
Earlier, an emergency restraining order had been issued against him due to concerns over potential mass casualty incidents, as Liebert had expressed intentions of causing harm. This order highlighted his previous statements about wanting to kill as many people as possible.
Liebert has been charged with murder, along with several other offenses connected to the use of a deadly weapon and the nature of the ambush.
In the aftermath, the art gallery where Summers worked has been closed. The community is mourning the loss, as many knew her fondly. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support her grandchildren’s education.
“Rachel was a loving and devoted grandmother, mother, and friend who cared deeply for her community. She dreamed of a bright future for her grandchildren and prioritized their education,” the campaign description notes.
