Tragic Death of Cyclist Samuele Privitera
Samuele Privitera, a young cyclist, tragically passed away from injuries sustained in a crash during the first phase of the Tour of Valle d’Aosta in Italy. He was just 19 years old.
Reports indicate that Privitera struck a speed bump, which led to him losing control of his bike and colliding with a barrier. This incident occurred while he was descending at a speed of 70 km/h, roughly 35 kilometers from the finish line in Aosta.
It seems he even lost his helmet during the accident. The race organizers have stated that the circumstances surrounding the crash are currently unclear and are under investigation by public safety authorities.
Privitera was part of the Hagens Berman Jayco team. Team Director Axel Merckx expressed profound sorrow over the loss, stating that Privitera had always been a vibrant presence within the team. “Samuele was the life and character of this team,” Merckx shared. “It’s hard to fathom this moment. He brought joy and kindness, illuminating every space he occupied. His absence is indescribable.”
In a poignant tribute, riders in the Tour de France held a minute of applause for Privitera during Thursday’s race. Tadej Pogačar, a prominent competitor, remarked on the devastating loss of such young talent in a sport filled with risks. “It’s heartbreaking,” he said, adding condolences to Privitera’s family.
The Tour of Valle d’Aosta is scheduled to continue, with events resuming on Friday. Cordino Dagnoni, chair of the Italian Cycling Federation, emphasized the need for ongoing safety improvements in cycling. “We must reflect on how to make races safer,” he noted. A committee had been formed previously to explore safety measures and updates to regulations, and Dagnoni underscored the urgency to enhance safety for youth cyclists, clubs, and the cycling community as a whole.
