2 children dead in rural Missouri home explosion

Two children were killed Friday when a house exploded in rural eastern Missouri, authorities said.

Emergency calls were called to a home in Defiance, about 40 miles west of St. Louis, just before 7:45 a.m. Two children were trapped in the house, but rescue workers were unable to reach them due to the intense flames.

Two adults who lived in the home survived, authorities said. One person suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The other person was not injured.

A St. Charles County police officer was also treated for minor injuries.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation, but authorities have not released the children's names.
