2 dead in fire at Long Island senior housing complex

Two women were killed Sunday when a fire broke out at a senior housing complex on Long Island, police said.

A 10-unit building fire at the Jesse Harmon Shepherd Hill complex in Plainview killed Teresa Casale, 84, and Lynn Citron, 74, in their apartment, Nassau County police said. Firefighters found him dead at the hospital with severe burns.

The fire broke out just after 5 a.m. Sunday and destroyed the second floor and roof of a two-story building in the complex just east of the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway. The complex is owned by the City of Oyster Bay Housing Authority.

“It’s a nightmare. It was literally the scariest thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” resident Vincent Lupo told WCBS-TV.

Two residents were treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation. Plainview Deputy Chief Andrew Cohen said firefighters rescued the unconscious woman, who is now expected to make a full recovery. Other residents were treated at the scene.

Cohen said part of the roof collapsed and two firefighters were hit by debris. The firefighters, including Cohen’s son, were pulled to safety by a third firefighter, the deputy chief told Newsday.
