Deputy Chief Don Jerome said police responded to a report of a shooting in the Greater Grand Crossing area around 6:15 a.m., leaving a 42-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman dead.
Three boys, ages 8, 7 and 5, are in critical condition at Comer Children’s Hospital.
“The investigation revealed that two vehicles had stopped in the area. Multiple individuals exited the vehicles and fired shots into the residence,” Jerome told reporters at the scene. “Multiple shell casings were recovered at the scene from both a rifle and a handgun.”
Jerome said the victims were all inside the home at the time of the attack. Police are unsure of the victims’ relationships at this time and declined to identify them, Jerome said.
Jerome maintained he was unaware of the nature of the personal dispute that likely led to the shooting.
Grand Crossing City Councilman Desmon Yancey said he wasn’t aware of any problems prior to the shooting.
“This is a relatively quiet community and not used to this kind of violence,” he said.
