2 officers killed, inmate escapes after deadly ambush in France

Two French prison officers were killed, three others seriously injured and one inmate escaped when armed assailants attacked a convoy in Normandy on Tuesday, officials said. A search was underway.

The convoy was ambushed on the closed A154 motorway while transporting prisoner Mohamed Amra to Evreux prison after a court hearing in Rouen.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in a post on X that the attack was “a shock to all of us.”

Authorities worked to secure the area in northwestern France and capture the attackers. It is not clear how many people were involved.

Amla was detained at the Val de Reuil prison center near Rouen following a recent conviction for robbery. Prosecutor Laure Becuau said he was also being investigated for a kidnapping and murder in Marseille.

French media reported that Amla’s nickname is “La Mouche” (The Fly).

Commissioner Bequo announced that the attack would be investigated as a case of organized crime and murder, and said the two injured officers were in a critical condition.

The investigation will also address charges of organized escape attempts, possession of military weapons and criminal conspiracy.
