MicahJo Barnett, a football player from a small college in Missouri, tragically passed away during a game on Saturday due to a “medical emergency” after scoring a touchdown. He was just 20 years old.
During the first quarter of the game against Fort Lewis College at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Missouri, the running back from William Jewell College reportedly collapsed on the sidelines after his touchdown, as reported by Us Weekly.
Liberty Police Captain Nathan Mulch informed the media that medical staff were present and that Barnett was quickly taken to a local hospital. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, he could not be revived and was later pronounced dead at the facility.
The specific cause of death is still unknown.
As medical professionals treated Barnett, the game was temporarily halted and ultimately canceled after his passing was confirmed.
Students at William Jewell College held a vigil for Barnett that same evening.
“Our hearts are heavy, and we appreciate all of the support that we have received from the greater community … We join with the greater Liberty community … [to mourn] the passing of MicahJo Barnett,” remarked university president Dr. Dave Van Horn during a press conference on Saturday. “I want to express gratitude for the swift and effective response from the sheriff’s office, police department, EMS, our institution, and the team’s physician.”
In a statement, the college conveyed, “Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss.”
Shawn Jakubowski, the athletic director at Fort Lewis College, extended condolences from their team as well.
“Our hearts are with [MicahJo’s] family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone at William Jewell during this incredibly difficult time,” he wrote in a post on X. “The Fort Lewis counseling staff is connecting with our football team to ensure our players receive the support they need.”
Barnett was recognized as an Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honoree for the 2025-26 year and led his team in rushing last season.
He is survived by his six siblings and parents.
