Florida Woman Released on Bail After Controversial Case

A 20-year-old woman in Florida, Ann May Demejilo, has been released from jail after being accused of giving birth in a bathroom, then watching her newborn drown, and ultimately burying the infant in her backyard.

Demejilo was granted bail set at $250,000. As part of her release, she must adhere to certain conditions including surrendering her passport, wearing a GPS tracking device, and not having contact with minors. Local news sources have highlighted these developments.

During the bond hearing, a Flagler County Sheriff’s Detective revealed that Demejilo expressed regret over not being able to change the past regarding her actions. “He asked if he could go back 48 hours and handle it differently, and he answered negatively,” the detective shared.

According to Sheriff Rick Staley, Demejilo admitted to witnessing her baby drown after cleaning up the aftermath of the birth. Reportedly, “She mentioned hoping the baby would die quickly,” Staley remarked.

While the state argued against granting bail due to concerns that Demejilo posed a threat to the community and might destroy evidence, her attorney, Michael Politis, pointed out that while his client displayed unusual behavior, he did not believe she posed a danger to others. Instead, he characterized the event as an isolated incident.

Reports indicate that Demejilo was released Thursday afternoon. Upon leaving jail, she reportedly hurried away, avoiding questions from the media.

In a previous statement, Demejilo claimed she thought the baby had died and had hidden the infant in a duffel bag in her closet before continuing with her daily routine. Allegedly, after returning from a theater outing last Thursday, she buried the deceased baby in a shallow grave without ever contacting emergency services.

A sheriff’s official expressed their own confusion regarding the situation, echoing Demejilo’s state of mind: “To be honest, I’m confused. Sometimes I can’t explain everything,” he stated.

The newborn girl, according to reports, weighed 3 pounds, 6 ounces and measured 18 inches long. Demejilo may face charges of aggravated manslaughter, with additional charges for evidence tampering anticipated as the case progresses.
