2024 ‘Autopsy’ points to Biden Administration and campaign approach as reasons for Harris's loss

DNC Releases Post-Election Report Analyzing 2024 Loss

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) issued a detailed report on Thursday, spanning 192 pages, explaining the factors behind the Democratic Party’s defeat in the 2024 presidential election.

In the wake of President Donald Trump’s win, the document places significant blame on President Biden for not sufficiently supporting then-Vice President Kamala Harris during his term.

“The national campaign fell short in highlighting President Trump’s shortcomings, while the White House didn’t effectively assist Vice President Harris in strengthening her position over the three-and-a-half years prior to the candidate shift. Although the media referred to her as the ‘border czar,’ this title was not challenged or corrected by the White House,” the report notes.

This report, which the DNC was hesitant to release, notably avoids discussing some contentious issues. It does not mention former President Biden’s perceived cognitive decline, the choice of Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) as Harris’ running mate, internal party tensions regarding Israel after the October 7, 2023, terrorist attacks, or the prolonged inflation that many Americans faced during Biden’s presidency.

“The Republican victory in 2024 hinged largely on their ability to learn more from the president than the Democrats did,” wrote Paul Rivera, a former strategist for Bill Clinton and the report’s author.

“Since President Obama’s significant win in 2008, when he secured nearly 10 million more votes than John McCain, the Democratic Party has fluctuated between stagnation and decline,” the report stated.

DNC Chairman Ken Martin had initially pledged to disclose these findings last January but postponed the release until December 2025, leading to considerable criticism within the party.

“I’m not proud of this report. It doesn’t reflect my standards, and frankly, it won’t meet yours either. I don’t endorse its contents or anything that might emerge from it. Yet, I believe in transparency, so I’m releasing the report as it was received—unaltered and unedited—along with notes on claims I couldn’t verify,” stated Martin in a written message.

Amid these tumultuous developments, some party members advocated for a constructive outlook. Adrian Elrod, a former spokesperson for Harris’ campaign, shared her thoughts on social media.

“Though the report has its shortcomings, I’m thankful he made it public. Let’s move forward and channel our energy into winning the midterm elections!” — Adrian Elrod
