Kenyan Runners Shine at 2025 New York City Marathon

This past Sunday, Kenyan athletes once again showcased their prowess at the 2025 New York City Marathon. Benson Kipruto claimed the top spot in the men’s race, while Helen Obiri set a new women’s record.

Kipruto, 34, finished in 2:08:09, but it was quite a dramatic final stretch as fellow Kenyan Alexander Mutiso Munyao chased closely behind.

Meanwhile, Obiri, 35, not only won but also set a new course record at 2:19:51, marking her second victory at the TCS NYC Marathon.

This year’s marathon was the 54th edition of this iconic race, which begins in Staten Island, stretches through Brooklyn and Queens, grazes the Bronx, and wraps up in Central Park, Manhattan.

The event kicked off with the men’s wheelchair race. Marcel Hug from Switzerland made a strong comeback, reclaiming the championship after losing it last year, following a three-year streak of victories.

“I’m so emotional to win here in New York,” Hug shared with excitement post-race. “I’m really happy to be on the podium again. It’s awesome.”

In the women’s wheelchair category, American Susanna Scaloni secured her second consecutive win and marked her third career win in this marathon.

Ethiopian runner Tamirat Tora, who took first place in the 2023 marathon, recorded the fastest time ever for the event at 2 hours, 4 minutes, and 58 seconds.

With a rich history, the New York City Marathon first took place in 1970, featuring just 55 finishers who ran solely in Central Park. Today, it has ballooned to over 55,000 participants from across the globe, with millions watching on TV and cheers ringing out from the streets.
