Mixed Reactions to 2026 New Year’s Party Glasses
The start of the new year hasn’t been quite what many expected.
Both New Yorkers and visitors are expressing their dissatisfaction with the latest version of the Big Apple’s iconic 2026 New Year’s Party Glasses.
Selling for $3.99 at a Times Square gift shop, these glossy shades feature a giant “200!” with both zeros functioning as lenses, while a “26” sits above them. It’s certainly puzzling.
“That’s rubbish! It’s impossible!” exclaimed Katie Burling, who was visiting from Northern California. “It just doesn’t make sense,” she added, suggesting even the designs from 2010 might have been more straightforward.
Another onlooker in Manhattan, Merrill, criticized the glasses as “pretty tacky.” They raised a valid question: “Adding zero to ’26’? Is this some sort of math problem?”
Izzy Leonard echoed those sentiments, commenting that the annual tradition has “gotten out of hand.” Celebrating nearby, the 28-year-old wondered aloud, “Why is there a 26 near my forehead? And what’s with the exclamation point?”
Lillian Redd from South Carolina chose to focus her attention elsewhere. “I think I’ll just stick to the necklace and hat,” she mentioned, seemingly uninterested in the spectacle.
The more well-known version of the New Year’s “2026” glasses didn’t impress many either, largely because they offered minimal visibility.
Speaking about her Irish grandparents, Alexis found a pair with just “Happy New Year” written across the top. “I think they like it better this way since you can actually see through them,” she noted, adding they plan to enjoy the ball drop from home.
“Honestly, I prefer shot glass chains or Minnie ears,” she remarked. “After a couple of drinks, it’s hard to even peek at the number.”
Nevertheless, there were still fans of the unusual “200!26” glasses.
Giovanna Noble, a 22-year-old visitor from Brazil, found them unique. “It’s much funkier than the regular version,” she stated, clearly enjoying the creative twist.
Sherry Williams from Maryland expressed hope that the tradition of quirky glasses continues, even as the designs become increasingly complex. “It’s unbelievable. It’s really connected to the new year,” she stated, adding, “You should keep wearing glasses!”
