Power Bank Review: Finding the Best for New Yorkers
In New York City, a smartphone serves as more than just a device; it acts as a MetroCard, a bike key, a navigation tool, and, for some, even a key to their home. So, when your phone dies, it’s not just a minor annoyance. It’s akin to losing your wallet, transit pass, and home key all at once.
As part of the New York Post’s Made It Here Awards, we evaluated eight power banks to determine which ones can reliably keep a New Yorker’s phone charged from morning until they return home.
Throughout a busy two-month schedule that included commuting from Long Island and exploring the city, I relied on these power banks as my sole source of charge for my iPhone. After extensive testing over eight weeks, I found out which ones performed well and which ones couldn’t keep up.
Testing Methodology
I devoted a week to each power bank, using them as my only power source. This meant depending fully on them for critical tasks like scanning my transit tickets, using navigation apps, and taking countless pictures. We assessed each power bank based on five equal criteria:
- Charging Speed: How quickly could it revive a dying battery?
- Real-World Capacity: Did it deliver enough charge to outlast the heavy drain of active use?
- Portability: Was it easy to carry around without adding bulk?
- Heat Management: How warm did both the bank and phone get during use?
- Value: Did the design and performance justify its price tag?
Top Power Banks Reviewed
Anker MagGo Power Bank 2 Pro
This model is the one we’d recommend to any New Yorker. It features both magnetic attachment and the fastest wireless charging at 25W. It efficiently charged my iPhone from 0% to 50% in around 30 minutes while using its fan to manage heat during operation.
Specs: 10,000mAh capacity, 25W wireless and 45W wired charging, which allows for quick recharging itself. However, it’s slightly bulky at 18 mm thick, but worth juggling in a bag.
Ugreen MagFlow Pro
For those who log long hours outside, this power bank is a solid choice. It provides almost two full charges, supports 25W wireless and 45W wired charging, and incorporates a unique liquid cooling system. The downside? It’s heavier than some others and lacks a built-in stand.
At $129.99, it might be a splurge, but the built-in cable is convenient for everyday use.
Belkin BoostCharge Slim
This is the most affordable magnetic option at $54.99. Lightweight with a built-in kickstand, it offers basic charging but only provides one full charge before needing a recharge, which might be limiting for some.
BMX SolidSafe AIR
Extremely thin and made from titanium, this device is barely noticeable when attached to your phone. While it won’t save you in an extended power outage, it’s a reliable backup for daily commuting. However, it charges slowly and has limited capacity.
Mophie Powerstation Prime
This bank includes a versatile kickstand and can charge two devices simultaneously. Priced at $69.95, it has a premium finish and is good for support during streaming or video calls.
Nimble Share PowerBank
User-friendly for concerts or outings with friends, this unique setup splits into two separate banks. It can charge multiple devices together, but the magnetic connection could be a bit more solid.
Scosche GoBat
This lightweight option combines a power bank with a wall charger, making it a practical travel companion. It allows pass-through charging, but the built-in cable could be a potential weak link.
Goal Zero Sherpa 100AC
With an impressive capacity, this one is intended for serious power needs, housing multiple ports for charging various devices simultaneously. It isn’t for carrying around casually, as it is quite heavy and larger than many alternatives.
Conclusion
If there’s one power bank to invest in, it’s the Anker MagGo Power Bank 2 Pro, due to its reliability, rapid charging features, and overall performance. However, if you’re looking for something less bulky or perhaps less expensive, either the Belkin or BMX could suit your needs better. In a city like New York, having a dependable power bank is essential, making these options worthwhile investments.
