Rescue Operations in Collapsed Colombian Gold Mine

In Colombia, a group of 23 workers was saved on Wednesday after being trapped for 43 hours in a collapsed gold mine situated in the northern region. The miners emerged from the Larelicia mine in Antioch to applause from those gathered.

The National Mining Agency of Colombia indicated that the incident occurred when the mine’s front entrance collapsed, which was attributed to “geo-mechanical damage.” A video circulated by the agency captured the moment the first miner climbed to safety, using ropes to navigate the steep path leading out.

While the health condition of the miners wasn’t immediately disclosed, their families had been anxiously waiting for news and celebrated the rescue with tears and cheers.

Though the mine operates on land owned by the Canadian company ARIS Mining, it is managed by a local cooperative. ARIS Mining reported that they supplied food, water, and ventilation to aid the trapped workers during the rescue efforts.

The mine employs about 60 individuals, contributing only a small fraction to the overall gold output for the company in the region. ARIS runs two mining concessions in Colombia, where they produced approximately 6.6 tonnes of gold last year.

In 2024, Colombia’s gold production reached 67 tonnes annually, buoyed by rising precious metal prices.

Notably, a 2023 report from the Colombian Human Rights Ombudsman highlighted a concerning fact: more than 80% of Colombian gold is extracted by unlicensed operators, including artisan miners and individuals associated with rebel groups. This raises worries about the safety and legality surrounding gold mining in the country.

Unfortunately, the unstable conditions at many of Colombia’s gold mines have led to tragic accidents in the past. Just last Saturday, for instance, the remains of seven miners were discovered in a collapsed illegal mine in Cauca, taking rescuers nine days to reach the site and recover the victims.
