A boat capsized off Senegal’s northern coast, killing at least 20 people and injuring many others, officials said, underscoring the dangers of the sea route for a growing number of West African migrants heading to Spain.

The boat, bound for Europe, capsized near the town of Saint-Louis and the body washed ashore on Wednesday afternoon, local governor Alioune Badala Sambé said, and the fire department was alerted.

He said the injured were being treated at a St. Louis hospital and an investigation had been launched into the circumstances of the accident.
