A young politician has taken the helm as mayor of a blue-collar town in New Jersey, just one week after the previous two-term mayor failed to act on 14 fire alarms that led to mass evacuations.
At just 24 years old, Frank Velez emerged victorious against outgoing Belleville Mayor Michael Melham in the recent election, securing his win by about 1,000 votes.
Velez, who has previously served on the town council and worked for the late Congressman Bill Pascrell, is stepping into this role after Melham’s eight-year tenure, which has now come to an end.
This change comes in light of a significant fire incident at a mattress factory on May 3, which ignited a whole block and drew a vast response from fire departments, some coming from over an hour away.
Despite the chaotic response, Melham claimed there was “no threat or concern to residents of any kind,” even though there were moments of power loss at the police station, and embers from the fire caused an additional blaze several blocks away.
No injuries occurred, yet the aftermath saw many locals beginning to question Melham’s leadership. In the days following the fire, residents found themselves relying on social media and group chats for updates instead of getting official communication from the government.
“Our community navigated uncertainty with little to no official guidance,” a joint letter from local parents and educators stated, emphasizing the need for better communication during such crises.
Frank Velez has centered his campaign on enhancing the quality of life and community development, issues crucial to those impacted by the recent disaster.
Amidst the turmoil, Melham reportedly released damaging mailers aimed at Velez, focusing on his personal life choices, including his decision to live at home to support his special needs sister.
Velez responded firmly, stating, “We’re going to say no to petty attacks… and restore basic respect in this town because that’s what people want and deserve.”
He is now on track to become one of the youngest mayors in the nation, expressing gratitude and readiness to begin his new responsibilities. “I am filled with gratitude… This was a huge victory,” Velez mentioned, reflecting on the support he received.
Velez holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and government from Fordham University, graduating in December 2023. While studying, he contributed to the Belleville School Board and managed social media for various local campaigns.
